10 Tips For Designing Your Dream Bedroom
Posted by Michelle on Feb 09, 2021
When it comes to designing your ideal bedroom, your personality is the key. We have thought of ten tips to help you optimise your vision, and create the bedroom of your dreams.
1. Less is more.
You hear this all the time, and it is especially true in relation to your bedroom. Of course, you’re not expected to go Spartan Chic, and only have a bed in your room, but cluttering your bedroom can be even worse. Try to keep your bedroom furniture choices to a few matching, practical storage options. The uncrowded look will help you feel at peace in your bedroom.
2. Colour is key.
Unless you really like the monochromatic grey look, you’ll want to have colour in your bedroom. To help with your colour choices, here are a few things to think about.
What is your favourite colour? This is most important, as it’s your room, and you need to love your space. Being surrounded by your favourite colour can do wonders for your mood.
Also, consider using neutral colours with coloured highlights. Neutral colours are generally calming, and by adding a feature wall of colour, with match furnishings, you can create a space that shines, without being overdone. Taking into account your local climate is also something to consider when choosing colours.
Using warm, bright colours, like red or yellow in a cold climate can help elevate your mood, just as cool, muted colours, like blues or greens, can help you feel refreshed and cool in hotter climates.
3. Choose the right furniture for you.
This might sound self-evident, but it is actually something that can be quite difficult. This is especially the case if you have older pieces of furniture that you are incorporating into your space, like antique dressers, or family heirlooms. Make sure you love the new furniture you’re bringing in, as the bedroom is where you will spend around a third of your life. Try not to choose items based on what other people have, and if you have the time, wait for that piece that makes you go ‘Wow!’
4. Match and contrast colours, textures, and materials, to create depth and vibrancy in your bedroom.
Try using a single colour, along with neutrals, but vary the hue of that colour. This will give the impression of shifting light in your room and will remove a sense of uniformity. Different textures, patterns, and materials will add to the interest that you have in your room, by always providing something different to catch the eye.
5. Layers can be your best friend when it comes to making your bed look like the comfiest place in the world.
Think blankets, cushions, pillows, and doonas. You probably won’t want to sleep with them all, but when it comes to inviting bedroom designs, soft and squishy rules the day.
6. Curtains are the hidden hero of the bedroom, and strangely enough, they are hidden in plain sight of everyone.
While the perfect set of curtains will help to offset the decor of your bedroom, we all know what it’s like to walk into a room with horrible curtains. The great ones blend in, the bad ones stick out. Stay true to your colour schemes with your curtains, and make sure they match the theme that you’re bringing to your room.
7. Who doesn’t love a bit of luxury?
Every bedroom should contain something that makes you feel that little bit more expensive. Depending on your tastes, it could be gold or silver highlights, a nice armchair, or fancy pieces of art. Anything goes, as long as it is something that makes you feel good, special, and a little bit regal.
8. Lighting is always super important in any room, but especially so in the bedroom.
Daytime lighting should be copious and natural, so pulling back the curtains and letting the sun in is your best bet. At night, consider lamps and uplights for your bedroom. Lamps give you access to your lighting from bed, so you don’t have to get up once you’re warm and comfy, and uplights give you the benefit of lighting the full room, without having an overwhelming light source staring you in the face from the middle of the ceiling. This helps if you like to read in bed, or if you use your lighting to help you wake up in the morning.
9. Accessories can be a little tricky, as they can be the things that most clutter up your bedroom.
Lamps, rugs, and a couple of feature pieces (and I do mean only a couple) should be enough to make your room feel like it embodies your character, without flooding the room with too many bits and pieces.
10. Mirrors in your bedroom are great for quite a few reasons.
One of the big benefits of mirrors is that they create the illusion that your room is larger than it is. Added to this, they can make a room brighter by reflecting your normal light sources back into the space. A good full-length mirror is also great to help with choosing your outfits, but make sure you get a good one as the cheaper ones can often distort your reflection.
