Answering Your Questions About Electric Blankets

Posted by Michelle on Jun 10, 2021

It's starting to get colder here in Sydney Australia, and that means it's time to bring out the winter bedding! One of our favourite additions to any bed in winter is a super cozy and warm electric blanket! If you are interested in adding an electric blanket to your bed, you may have some questions that need answers. Well, we are here to answer all your questions relating to electric blankets! If you would like to see your question answered here, don't hesitate to reach out and contact us!

Are Electric Blankets Safe?

Close to all new electric blankets have multiple safety mechanisms in place in order to protect anyone who decides that an electric blanket is for them! All electric blankets have to be approved by the Australian government before they are sold to the public and have to go through vigorous testing processes to ensure the safety of those who use the blanket.

Safety features such as overheat protection modules and timers are required for electric blankets to be as safe as possible. At My Linen, we only stock electric blankets that have been approved by the Australian government for use in Australia. We take our customers safety very seriously and have a 2-year warranty on most of our electric blanket range.

How To Wash An Electric Blanket

While every electric blanket will have its own care instructions, and we strongly advise you read them before following any advice you read online, there are some simple ways you can wash your electric blanket.

Make sure you switch off and remove any plugs from the wall before detaching the controller. Once you have detached the controller from the rest of the blanket, you can either hand wash the blanket, or do a cool machine wash on a delicate cycle. Most modern electric blankets are protected by a waterproof layer that keeps the electrics safe from liquids.

Once washed, we recommend that you do not tumble dry your electric blanket. Rather, dry it on a clothesline with no pegs as to not damage the internal wiring.

Make sure you don't iron, tumble dry or dry clean your electric blanket, and make sure your electric blanket is completely dry before reattaching the controller and turning on your electric blanket.

Can You Put An Electric Blanket Under A Mattress Topper?

The short answer to this question is that it's up to you, but it's recommended to keep it under your topper! You can place your electric blanket wherever you like, given that the rest of your bedding is able to be used with an electric blanket. We would recommend that you keep your safety in mind though when deciding how to use your electric blanket.

Our recommendation would be to place it under your mattress topper.

Are Electric Blankets Safe For Kids?

All our electric blankets here at My Linen have been approved for sale by the Australian government. We do not stock any electric blankets that are in violation of the governments ruling.

Taking that into consideration, we would recommend you consider whether or not you feel comfortable with your child having an electric blanket. Whilst children have heaps of potential for greatness, sometimes their decision-making skills still need developing. An electric blanket is just like any other electrical appliance, and needs to be treated with just as much caution, so if you feel uncomfortable with your child interacting with electrical appliances, we would recommend you take a look at our snuggly blanket range.

If you feel comfortable with your child around electronic appliances, we would suggest an electric blanket is an appropriate thing for kids given you make sure they understand what it is. Teach them about how to set timers and what to look out for before turning on your electric blanket.
